Making the Move: Why the Netherlands?

Living in the Netherlands as an Expat: What to Expect

There are plenty of reasons why the Netherlands keeps coming up for expats – and honestly, it’s not hard to see why.

But deciding to move to a new country is never just about the job. It’s about whether you can actually build a life there – feel settled, meet people, and not spend every evening Googling how basic things work. “Great place for internationals” gets said about a lot of countries. So what does it actually look like in practice?

A job market that actually welcomes internationals

One of the biggest worries when moving abroad is finding a job – especially if you don’t speak the local language yet. This is part of why the Netherlands is such a popular choice for expats – that barrier is often much smaller than you’d expect.

There’s strong demand in fields like tech, engineering, finance, logistics, and customer service, and many companies are used to hiring internationally. In a lot of workplaces, English is simply the default. That means you can focus on settling in and growing your career, rather than stressing about language requirements from day one.

For expats who are just starting their job search here, customer service roles are often a great entry point – they’re widely available, international by nature, and a solid way to build local experience while you find your footing. And if you’re not sure where to start, working with a recruitment agency that knows the Dutch market can make the whole process a lot less overwhelming.

Healthy work-life balance

Another reason why the Netherlands appeals to so many expats is the approach to work-life balance. If you’re coming from a culture where long hours are the norm, this might feel like a bit of a culture shock (in the best way).

Leaving on time is normal here. Working part-time is common. And having a life outside your job isn’t just accepted, it’s expected. Flexible hours and remote options are widely available, and the focus is on getting things done efficiently rather than being seen at your desk. You’re trusted to do your job without having to prove it by staying late.

The workplace culture itself also takes some getting used to. The Dutch tend to be direct – feedback is honest, meetings are to the point, and hierarchy is flatter than you might be used to. It can feel blunt at first, but most expats come to appreciate it. You always know where you stand.

You’ll find your people faster than you think

Another reason why the Netherlands works so well for expats – it’s a lot less isolating than you might expect, especially in the bigger cities. AmsterdamRotterdamUtrecht, and Eindhoven are incredibly international – you’ll meet people from all over the world, many of them in the exact same situation as you.

From expat communities to international workplaces, building a social circle here happens more naturally than you might think. And because so many people around you have also made the move at some point, there’s a shared understanding that makes it easier to connect. It’s one of the reasons why the Netherlands feels less isolating than you might expect.

It’s the little things that make daily life easier

Beyond work, it’s the everyday stuff that wins people over. Getting around is simple – yes, you’ll probably end up cycling everywhere, and yes, you’ll enjoy it. Public transport is reliable. Healthcare is well organised. Things generally just work.

Add in green parks, weekend markets, good coffee, and the fact that you can be in another European country within a couple of hours, and life here feels both practical and enjoyable. It’s not a flashy lifestyle, but it’s a comfortable and balanced one – and for a lot of expats, that’s exactly what they were looking for.

A few things that take adjustment

It’s not all smooth sailing from day one, and that’s worth knowing before you make the move. Finding housing can be competitive, especially in the bigger cities. Setting up your BSN, arranging health insurance, and navigating the admin side of things takes a bit of time and patience. These are all very doable, but part of why the Netherlands works for so many expats is that the systems are clear and support is available. We cover a lot of the practical side of settling in across our other blogs, so it’s worth having a read if you’re still in the planning stage.
